Fire Forces Evacuation of 100 Residents From Building

A bag left in a trash chute may have caused the blaze, officials said

A fire erupted in an eight-floor building in Miami-Dade early Thursday morning displacing more than 100 residents, authorities said.

Several residents were forcibly evacuated from the building located on the 9100 block of SW 77th Ave. after they refused to leave their homes, according to the Miami-Dade Fire Department.

Fire officials said a bag left on the fifth floor of the trash shoot somehow caught fire and ignited the blaze.

One woman was treated for eye irritation and minor smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

“It was a lot of smoke, you can’t even see where you walking,” said Jimmy VanTuyl, who had to evacuate the building.

Authorities are investigating whether the fire was accidental or intentional.
