Authorities are investigating after a City of Miami firefighter was found dead from a gunshot wound near the Rickenbacker Causeway Wednesday morning.
The incident was reported around 8 a.m. on the side of the road headed toward Key Biscayne.
Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Ignatius Carroll confirmed a male firefighter was dead at the scene.
The firefighter, who identity wasn't released, was wearing his uniform and was scheduled to work Wednesday.
"We're trying to determine exactly what happened here," Carroll said. "We're not sure exactly how this happened or why it happened but we do know this is a very sad moment today for the City of Miami Fire Department and for the members of the department."
Carroll said grief counselors would be made available to other firefighters.
