Five people were injured by bullets in the Palm Beach area during the Fourth of July holiday, the Palm Beach Post reported.
One injured woman, identified by a friend as 64-year-old Ulrike “Ulla” White, was in good condition Thursday after she was hit by a stray bullet while on a cruise ship, city officials said.
White, who was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, was injured at about 9:30 p.m. while on the Majestic Princess Cruise. The captain of the ship, Ken Gibson, told the newspaper the woman had a small wound above her chest but was cared for immediately.
“Everybody was having a good time,” Gibson was quoted as saying. “It was very unfortunate. This is the first time I’ve had that happen.”
Palm Beach Police spokesman Fred Hess said authorities are trying to determine the reason for the shooting, or if the woman was “shot by some stupid person shooting bullets into the sky,” the newspaper said.
A second 40-year-old woman, who is expected to make a full recovery, was hit by a stray bullet in the chest at Coleman Park, according to West Palm Beach Police spokesman Allan Ortman.
Less than an hour later, three teenagers were hit in the legs just blocks away from the park. It was reported that the teenagers were shooting fireworks when two other teens approached them from behind and fired shots, Ortman said.
