Fla. Abortion Rights Activists Object to Waiting Period Bill

A bill to require a 24-hour waiting period before getting an abortion is moving in the Florida Legislature, despite protests from pro-choice activists.

A Senate committee approved the bill Tuesday after the chairman cited a time limit for the meeting and cut off debate and public comments on the issue.

As the meeting ended, a representative of the National Organization for Women shouted an objection to the limits.

After adjournment, another went to the microphone to attempt to address the departing legislators, and a woman shouted objections at Sen. Anitere Flores, the Miami Republican sponsoring the bill.

Democratic Sen. Eleanor Sobel unsuccessfully sought to amend the bill, saying it would force women to make two clinic trips for an abortion, a burden on low-income or working women.
