Fla. Senator Among Finalists for FSU President's Job

Florida State University will consider four finalists for president, including powerful State Sen. John Thrasher.

A search committee on Monday endorsed Thrasher and three other academic candidates for the top post. The FSU board is scheduled to select a new president on Tuesday.

The other candidates include former West Virginia University Provost Michele Wheatly, Colorado State University System chancellor Michael Martin and University of Alabama at Birmingham vice president Richard Marchase.

Thrasher was picked even though his candidacy has prompted strong opposition from the faculty and from some students. FSU's faculty senate and Tallahassee's local newspaper are also opposed to him.

FSU has been without a president since Eric Barron left in April to take the top post at Penn State University.
