A Pembroke Pines high school was given the all-clear after being placed on lockdown when a dresser marked with racial slurs was found in a school courtyard, police said.
The all-clear was given just before 1 p.m. Wednesday at Flanagan High School, at 12800 Taft Street.
Aerial footage of the school showed a dresser with writing on it that read, "Open me! Surprise!" along with racial slurs and a swastika, located at an outside courtyard at the school.
Students being picked up by their parents were directed to wait at the Walter C. Young Middle School gym. Northbound traffic on 129th Avenue will be blocked off by officers.
Pembroke Pines and District Schools Police, along with the Broward Sheriff's Office bomb squad, were on scene investigating. The incident remains an active criminal investigation.
The Anti-Defamation League released a statement after the incident condemning what happened:
"ADL strongly condemns this vicious message of hate facially targeting African-Americans and Jews, which may rise to the level of a hate crime," said Hava Holzhauer, ADL Florida Regional Director. "This incident is particularly disturbing as the Jewish High Holiday of Rosh Hashanah begins tonight at sundown. ADL has been in close contact with the Pembroke Pines Police Department, as well as city officials, to offer our assistance and resources. We commend Pembroke Pines Police Chief Dan Guistino and Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel for their swift collaboration of resources to investigate this potential hate crime.”
