Florida Attorney Gets 3 Years in Rothstein Fraud Case

A South Florida attorney will serve three years in federal prison for helping the wife of convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein conceal $1 million in jewelry from investigators.

U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenbaum imposed the sentence Monday on lawyer Scott Saidel. He pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy to launder money, obstruct justice and tamper with a witness. Saidel reports to prison Nov. 21.

Court documents show that Saidel admitted helping Kim Rothstein hide the jewelry from authorities and later sell some of it. Kim Rothstein and a friend have also pleaded guilty in the case and will be sentenced later. They are expected to testify against two other men accused in the jewelry transaction.

Scott Rothstein is serving a 50-year prison sentence for operating a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme.
