Florida Department of Health Warns About Medical Marijuana Scams

The Florida Department of Health is warning residents about new medical marijuana scams.

Some businesses have been advertising free or reduced-cost access to medical marijuana and in some cases have said they are the "Office of Compassionate Use" when soliciting credit card information, the department said in a news release Wednesday.

The real Office of Compassionate Use is the only entity that is issuing identification cards for medical marijuana in the state, and no third party is authorized to process applications, officials said.

The department is warning residents against giving credit card info to third parties who advertise the ability to get medical marijuana cards, and said the department does not accept credit cards as a form of payment for Office of Compassionate Use identification cards.

There are seven dispensing organizations that have been authorized to process and dispense medical marijuana, and the department maintains a list of qualified ordering physicians here.

More information can be found on the Office of Compassionate Use's webpage.
