Florida High School Teacher Announces Gender Change

Parents, students and teachers at a high school in Pasco County received word that a social studies teacher no longer wants to be identified as a man.

The news came to parents via email and robocall on Thursday, while teachers learned of it at school, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"Mr. Konrad has begun the process of gender transition and is anticipating presenting as a female no later than August of 2015," Mitchell High School Principal Jim Michaels wrote in the email. "As you can imagine, this is a very private decision, but Mr. Konrad has indicated that he will respond to appropriate questions you may have about the transition process."

District officials say Robert Konrad has started the process of gender transition.

The 30-year-old Konrad couldn't be reached by the Times. A school district spokeswoman says officials worked with Konrad as he pondered how to reveal his news.

The spokeswoman says the district's goal was to be sensitive to Konrad's rights and students' rights. It was Konrad's decision to go public with the news.

Konrad has been a teacher at the school at 2010. His wife also works there.
