A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert after a five-vehicle, chain reaction crash on I-95 North near Commercial Boulevard, authorities said.
FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said it was incredible that the woman, who has been a state trooper for three years, did not die. Her patrol car was left looking like a heap of crunched metal.
"Amazing that she survived, it really is amazing, because that car was totally demolished,” Wysocky said.
The driver of a black pickup truck slammed into the parked patrol car, which was stopped on the median on I-95 North, Wysocky said.
"A pickup truck was traveling fast at high speed in the inside median lane," he said.
That lane is reserved for emergency situations like the one the trooper was handling at the time. She had pulled over and was inside her vehicle as she investigated an earlier crash – a three-vehicle accident that happened just north of Commercial Boulevard, Wysocky said.
