A former Florida inmate found herself back behind bars after she allegedly agreed to allow her unborn twins to be adopted by a couple – before taking thousands in dollars from them without delivering the babies as agreed.
According to NBC affiliate WFLA-TV, Ceara Stowe accepted money from the couple in Nebraska while she was in a Pinellas County jail. Investigators say Stowe signed paperwork for the adoption to be completed.
“We had previously had 2 failed adoptions over the past couple of years and so we were cautiously optimistic about this one and hoping it would work out,” said Lindsey Buechler from her Kearney, Nebraska home.
Stowe was released from jail in March and continued to be in contact with the couple through June 3rd, when she told them she was heading to the hospital to give birth.
But, as it turns out, Stowe had given birth to the boy and girl over a week before – after taking $24,000 from the couple.
“It wasn’t like, oh I had a change of heart. This was a very like deliberate malicious act,” Buechler said.

Stowe has been charged with two counts of adoption fraud. The twins are in the custody of her mother, who also has custody of Stowe’s other four children.
