Florida Lab Tests Mosquitoes for Zika Virus

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam is giving a tour of the state lab that is testing mosquitoes in Florida for the Zika virus.

Putnam on Thursday is showing off the tools in the lab that will be used to identify and combat the Zika virus.

The Florida Department of Health has tracked 122 cases of the Zika virus in the state. Of those cases, 36 involve pregnant women. All of the cases are related to travel.

The Zika virus causes only a mild and brief illness, at worst, in most people. But in the last year, infections in pregnant women have been strongly linked to fetal deaths and to potentially severe birth defects, mostly in Brazil.
