Florida Man Accused of Assault While High on Flakka Arrested

A 19-year-old man accused of attacking a Florida woman and her adult son while on the synthetic drug flakka has been released from the hospital and arrested.

Martin County sheriff's spokeswoman Christine Weiss said Tuesday that Niko Gallo is charged with burglary with an assault. Bail is set at $300,000.

As he was led into jail in a T-Shirt and pajama pants, Gallo was asked by a reporter if he has regrets.

"I do have regrets. I regret ever taking the drugs that I was on, and I regret breaking into that house and I regret hurting those people," he said. "I'm dearly sorry."

Officials say Gallo smashed through the home's front window early Sunday. He grabbed the woman and then fought her 34-year-old son. The woman hit Gallo in the head numerous times with a metal baseball bat before he was subdued by arriving deputies.

Gallo told the woman he had taken flakka, a street drug known for sometimes causing users to go berserk.

His family issued an apology Tuesday to the woman and her son.
