Consider it a gift from the state's Department of Transportation - no major road closures or detours due to road construction during the week between Christmas and New Year's in South Florida.
With work continuing on almost every major highway in the region, the break will bring welcome relief for commuters. Spokeswoman Barbara Kelleher tells the South Florida Sun-Sentinel the agency grants holidays to all contractors from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2. She says no requests have been received so far.
Kelleher says contractors may continue to work but they can't close lanes during that time. Roads that that are already closed will remain closed.
