Florida Prisoner Killed Cellmate, Gouged His Eyes and Cut Ear for Necklace Before Breakfast: Report

He put the eyeballs in a cup to consume later, sources said

An inmate at a Florida prison strangled his cellmate, gouged the body's eyes and then strung the dead inmate's ear around his neck with a string before breakfast, according to a report.

The Miami Herald reported that Larry Mark, 58, was killed early Thursday at the Columbia Correctional Institution.

The incident occurred hours before an unrelated gang fight between the Bloods and the Cutthroats erupted in another building at the prison compound located in Lake City.

Corrections officials said the prison houses some of the most violent inmates in the state.

A Department of Corrections spokesman said Mark had been serving a life sentence for a 1981 murder in Broward County.

Some sources told the Miami Herald that the cellmate became angry with Mark for pestering him.

The cellmate strangled Mark, cut his ear off and gouged out his eyeballs before putting the ear on a string around his neck to show it off to inmates as he walked toward the prison chow hall for breakfast, according to sources.

The inmate put Mark's eyeballs in a cup and told inmates he would eat or drink them in the future, sources said.

Neither the corrections agency nor the Florida Department of Law Enforcement provided the name of the attacker.

“Any loss of life at the hands of an inmate is intolerable, and we are working with our partners at FDLE to investigate this death and ensure anyone responsible is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," Julie Jones, secretary for the Florida Department of Corrections, told NBC affiliate WTLV in a statement.
