Florida Assault Rifle Ban Motion Fails: How Representatives Voted

What to Know

  • A gunman shot dead 17 people at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Wednesday.
  • The accused gunman may plead guilty to avoid the death sentence, according to reports.

In a 36-71 vote largely across party lines, the Florida House of Representatives struck down a motion to consider a bill that would ban assault rifles.

Florida's 120-seat House is controlled by Republicans, who have 76 seats compared to the 41 held by Democrats. There are three vacant seats.
