Officials say a 56-year-old surfer may have suffered a medical episode before his friends brought him to shore in New Smyrna Beach.
The man was taken to a hospital where he died Tuesday night.
Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Marris told the Daytona Beach News-Journal the man was sitting on his surf board about 6:45 p.m. when he fell into the water. His friends bought him onto the beach where lifeguards tried to resuscitate him.
Marris says the man had complained of chest pains earlier in the day.
Authorities have not released the man's name.
