Tampa Bay-Area Woman Among University of South Carolina Upstate Students Killed in Crash

Spartanburg County authorities have identified three of the four University of South Carolina Upstate students killed in a fiery wreck near the campus, including a young woman from the Tampa Bay area.

The coroner's office said the victims identified so far are 20-year-old Joshua Lee, of Spartanburg; 21-year-old James Robert Campbell, of Greenville and 21-year-old Sarah Grace Vande Berg, a native of Zephyrhills, Florida.

One other student died and another person was hurt. Their names have not been released.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of a car lost control and hit a tree near an intersection just north of Interstate 85 around 1:45 a.m. Sunday.

USC Upstate Chancellor Thomas Moore said in a statement there are no words to describe the loss to the campus of 6,000 students.

According to the university's website, Vande Berg played tennis at Zephyrhills High School where she served as team captain and lettered all four years. She was a senior at USC Upstate majoring in communication.

In a release, USC Upstate tennis head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said Vande Berg was one of his first recruits. He described her as very personable, someone who immediately fit in and was always welcoming to new members of the team.

A candlelight vigil is planned on campus Monday.
