Florida Woman Who Sought Daughter-in-Law's Murder Told Undercover Detective He Could Take Expensive Jewelry From Her Body: Authorities

Diana Reaves Costarakis, 70, offered the detective $5,000 for the job, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said

A 70-year-old woman is behind bars for attempting to hire an undercover detective to kill her daughter-in-law, after telling him that he could take the expensive jewelry from her body when the job was done, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

Diana Reaves Costarakis of Middleburg, Florida offered the detective $5,000 to kill her daughter-in-law when she met with him at a Home Depot at 9571 Crosshill Boulevard in Jacksonville on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said.

She gave him $500 as the first payment as well as a photo of the woman, her address, and car description – and then gave him another $1,000 when they met again on Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The suspect told the detective that her daughter-in-law wore expensive jewelry, and when the job was done, he could take the jewelry off the victim’s body,” the sheriff’s office said. “She stated the diamonds could be removed and sold without a trace and that money could be used towards the final payment.”

Costarakis promised to take care of things if the detective did not, according to the sheriff’s office.
When the detective asked if Costarakis wanted her daughter-in-law dead, she replied, “If you don’t, I will,” the sheriff’s office said.

Costarakis was arrested and immediately asked for an attorney after she was read her Miranda rights, the sheriff’s office said. It wasn’t immediately known Saturday if she has obtained representation.

Duval County Jail records show Costarakis is being held without bond on charges of criminal solicitation and criminal conspiracy, both first-degree felonies. She is due in court Oct. 31.
