Disturbing Journal Found After Former Student Brought Gun to Coral Springs High School: Police

Police say they found a disturbing 10-page journal belonging to one of two teenagers arrested Monday at Coral Springs High School.

The journal, which was released late Monday, depicted violence and talked about shooting up the school in January 2017.

The notes belonged to an associate of a former student who was taken into custody after he showed up at the school with a loaded gun, officials said.

The teen who detectives say had the journal was also detained and Baker Acted.

The associate told officers that the former student told him "Today is the day, it's going down," police said. Police said they are friends but said they are separate incidents.

The school at 7201 W. Sample Road was placed on lockdown around 12:45 p.m., Coral Springs Police said. The lockdown was later lifted around 2 p.m.

According to police, a student saw the former student with the gun in his waistband in the school's parking lot. The student told two other students who alerted a school resource officer who detained him and found a 9mm in his waistband, police said.

"The SRO found the person inside the cafeteria, a former student. He detained him and recovered a firearm on him," Coral Springs Police Sgt. Carla Kmiotek said.

Broward Schools officials said all students were safe.

"It was pretty hectic, they were pulling us into classrooms, turn off the lights, hide under the desks and everything," student Anthony Carlo said. "They kept me safe but it was pretty scary."

The 17-year-old suspect had attended the school last year but was no longer enrolled, officials said.

He was later charged with possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor, trespassing and disruption of school function.

"He's not supposed to be at school right now, he came in, they pulled him out," student Daniel Lane said. "They pulled a gun out of his waistband. I don't think he had intentions to use it, he's a good kid, you know."

Students were released on schedule and school is expected to be normal on Tuesday.
