Former Teachers Union President Pleads Guilty to Fraud

A former Broward Teachers Union president has pleaded guilty to defrauding and stealing thousands of dollars from the school board and union.

The U.S. Attorney's Office reports in a news release that 68-year-old Patrick Santeramo pleaded guilty Friday to one count of mail fraud. His sentencing is scheduled for April 22.

Authorities say Santeramo took about $93,000 for himself and three other employees during his time as union president, which ran from 2001 to 2011. The money came from annual $80,000 payments that the school board made to the union's accountability program.
