Fort Lauderdale Attorney Sentenced for Failing to Pay Taxes

A South Florida attorney who earned more than $8 million over a decade's time didn't file his tax returns and is now heading to federal prison.

A Fort Lauderdale federal judge last week sentenced 56-year-old Steven Siff of Davie to 13 months behind bars. He pleaded guilty to three counts of failing to file tax returns.

Siff must pay the Internal Revenue Service more than $924,000 in restitution and will be suspended from practicing law for 18 months.

Prosecutors say Siff hasn't filed a federal tax return since at least 1997. Between 2001 and 2011, Siff earned about $8.2 million in partnership profits at his Miami law firm.

Siff's lawyer says he was financially overextended due to a divorce and had a gambling problem.
