Fort Lauderdale Firefighter Dies After I-95 Accident

A 29-year veteran of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue died Tuesday afternoon after he was hit by a car while changing a tire on Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County.

Florida Highway Patrol said Lt. Kevin Johns was working on a flat tire around 7:30 a.m. when two cars were involved in an accident near the Yamato Road exit.

One of the cars hit the other and after the initial impact, the car continued off the road and hit Johns. The lieutenant was taken to Delray Medical Center, but died a little after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Chief Robert Hoecherl released the following statement later on Tuesday:

"Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue is deeply saddened by the loss of Fire Lieutenant Kevin Johns. Kevin served the citizens of Ft. Lauderdale for over 28 years and saved countless lives during that time. Kevin will be dearly missed by his fire department and city family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin’s wife Brenda and three children. Fort Lauderdale Fire wishes to thank all those in the community for the outpouring of support and kind words. We also would like to thank all our fire department brothers and sisters for being there for Kevin’s family and for being there for the members of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue."
