Police have arrested a teen who they say stole an cell phone from a Girl Scout as she sold cookies at a Fort Lauderdale grocery store.

The 15-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident is facing a grand theft charge in the incident that happened just after 8 p.m. Sunday at the Winn Dixie at 3260 Davie Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale Police said Tuesday.

A second juvenile suspect won't face charges, police said.

"Both detectives and officers who work in the neighborhood did know both of these young men from previous incidents," DeAnna Greenlaw, police spokeswoman.

According to police, the Girl Scouts were selling cookies outside with an adult supervising them when they were approached by the pair. One of the suspects distracted the girls and adult while the other took the phone that was lying on a table, police said.

Detectives obtained surveillance video of the incident and were able to identify the suspects from previous incidents in the area, police said.

"I just want them to learn their lesson. I really don't want them to go to jail," said Daley Eisenmann, 10.

The arrested teen's mother hung up on an NBC 6 reporter seeking comment.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Fort Lauderdale Police at 954-828-4007.
