Fort Lauderdale Raises Sale Age for Tobacco Products to 21

The Tobacco 21 ordinance raises the sale age from 18 to 21.

Fort Lauderdale city commissioners passed an ordinance that will raise the age limit to purchase tobacco products.

The Tobacco 21 ordinance raises the sale age from 18 to 21.

"The passing of Tobacco 21 is a major public health win for our community," said April Andrews-Singh, American Heart Association board president for the Greater Miami/Fort Lauderdale board. "We applaud the Mayor and City Commission for taking a great step in preventing Fort Lauderdale youth from a lifelong addiction to tobacco products for generations to come."

Fort Lauderdale is the second community in Florida to adopt Tobacco 21 laws.

The ordinance takes effect in March 2020.
