Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Firehouse 2 may have the number two in the name, but it’s also earned a new title: Busiest firehouse in the entire United States and Canada.
Besides ranking Firehouse 2 the busiest in the U.S., Fort Lauderdale Engine 8 was ranked as the busiest engine in Florida and the 10th busiest in the country, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Tim Heiser said, citing a recent survey from Firehouse Magazine.
Battalion Chief 2 was also named the second busiest in the state.
“We just cleared a fire, and right now, we’ve got units on a person in a wheelchair hit by a vehicle,” Battalion Chief David Carter said Tuesday evening. “We have a person having a seizure at a bus station. We have our typical chest pains, trouble breathing calls that we’re on.”
Still, the group tries to squeeze in time for dinner, which is made right at the station. It’s a much needed break for the fire-rescue workers at Firehouse 2.
“Every day for us is busy,” said Lt. Jason Bohan. “Our starting time is at 8. Before 8, we’re on the truck leaving the crew taking the first call.”
Still, while they appreciate being recognized as the busiest; the fire fighters wouldn’t mind a few helping hands.
“We definitely could use more help,” Battalion Chief Carter said. “National statistics show that any unit that runs over 3,500 runs a year is overworked. We have five or six units in excess of 3,500 runs a year.”
