Funeral Tuesday for Fort Lauderdale Firefighter Kevin Johns

Family members and friends were saying their last goodbyes Tuesday to a Fort Lauderdale firefighter who was struck and killed while changing a tire on Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County last week.

The funeral service for Lt. Kevin Johns was held at The Sanctuary Church at 1400 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale.

Before the ceremony, a massive procession took place from his Firehouse 13 to the church, with hundreds of firefighters and a group of bagpipers taking part.

Inside, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler delivered remarks along with family members and fellow firefighters.

Johns, a 29-year veteran of the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, was on his way to work when he had to change the flat tire around 7:30 a.m. on I-95 near the Yamato Road exit.

Two cars were involved in an accident and one of the cars hit the other and after the initial impact, the car continued off the road and hit Johns. Johns was taken to Delray Medical Center where he later died.

Johns left behind a wife and three children. He was set to retire next April.
