A Yorkie in Fort Myers became a victim of the food chain when it strayed too close to a pond and was eaten by an alligator.
Cheryl Young was letting her Yorkshire terrier run around without a leash Friday afternoon at the Estero Country Club when the 5-foot-long gator struck without warning and pulled the pooch into the pond.
Several hours later, a trapper was able to grab the gator, but unfortunately, the little Yorkie was gone. Its body surfaced Saturday.
Young plans on cremating the remains.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Gary Morse says it's common for gators to make meals of domesticated dogs.
