Gianni Versace's Partner Discusses Murder in New Dateline NBC Special

Nearly two decades after fashion designer Gianni Versace was shot to death on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion, his longtime partner is speaking out for the first time about the day of the murder in a new Dateline NBC special.

Dateline NBC's "The Death of Gianni Versace" will air this Friday at 9 p.m. EST on NBC 6. The investigation focuses on the murder of Versace and the manhunt for the serial killer who gunned him down.

Dateline reporter Keith Morrison spoke with Versace's partner Antonio D’Amico, who was in the Ocean Drive mansion when Versace was gunned down the morning of July 15, 1997.

"I heard the shot. My heart just stopped to beat," D'Amico said. "Something said to me, something happened. Anyways, I run out and I saw Gianni laid down on the stairs, in the blood."

Authorities soon learned the gunman was 27-year-old Andrew Cunanan, a suspect in at least four other murders across the country.

Lead investigator George Navarro of the Miami Beach police department also recalls how he found out Versace’s murder was connected to a string of homicides.

"I got goosebumps. Because now this was bigger than just Gianni Versace getting murdered," Navarro tells Morrison.

Dateline will also look at the eight-day manhunt for Cunanan, which ended at a houseboat in Miami where he fatally shot himself.

The two-hour show features new details and interviews with friends of Versace and Cunanan, as well as investigators who worked the case.

NBC 6's 11 p.m. news will feature an interview with Miami Beach's top cop at the time of the Versace murder immediately after Dateline on Friday night.
