Little girls call them troop leaders.

But the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida are calling them cookie monsters.

Five troop leaders in South Florida are being taken to court for missing cookie dough: proceeds from the Girl Scouts famed cookie sales.

Girl Scout officials claim they have given the troop leaders all summer to come up with the cash, but they haven't paid up. About $5,000 is missing from this year's cookie haul, according to theSun-Sentinel, and the Girl Scouts aren't trying to be paid in Thin Mints.

"This is money that belongs to the girls that they earn to do programs," spokeswoman Lisa Johnson told the Sentinel.

If the money isn't repaid, the Girl Scouts could take their action from civil to criminal. That would be one tough cookie to swallow if it came to that.

Luckily, most times, the troop leaders pay up or settle their cookie debt without ever going to court.

One woman paid up before she earned her "Cookie Crook" badge from the Girl Scouts, but had a warning for anyone thinking those delicious Samoas and shortbreads sell themselves.

"Cookie time is always a big headache," Benita Weston said. "People think it's just selling cookies, but there's more to it. There's a lot of paperwork and a lot of money that change hands. Whether a troop sells or doesn't sell, you're responsible for that money."
