Police say the man who was found dead in a canal was a burglary suspect who tried to escape.
The body of 24-year-old Dauntrae Sturrup was found by a golfer at the Weston Hills Country Club on Sunday evening.
The golfer alerted employees after he spotted the body in the canal at the club at 2600 Country Club Way around 5:15 p.m., the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
Broward Sheriff Office deputies said Monday that Sturrup was part of a group of men that was forced to flee a home in the area after the cops were called to the scene of a burglary on March 7.
One of the suspects, 24-year-old Jeannot Pierre, was caught by deputies and detectives think Sturrup likely jumped into the canal to avoid capture.
The Medical Examiner ruled Sturrup died by accidental drowning.
The two other burglary suspects have not been found.
