Gov. Scott to Speak at Hurricane Conference

Florida's new emergency management chief has the same message for the state's residents that he had for Wal-Mart employees: Be prepared for disasters.

Bryan Koon is the new director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. He spent the previous five years overseeing the emergency management operations for more than 8,500 Walmart stores and more than 2 million employees worldwide.

Koon says the best way Florida can prepare for hurricanes is to ensure that private citizens and businesses are prepared to take care of themselves in a storm's immediate aftermath. Koon says that would allow the government to focus on restoring infrastructure and other vital services.

Koon and Gov. Rick Scott are scheduled to speak at the Governor's Hurricane Conference in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday afternoon.
