Governor Scott Suspends Poitier

Deerfield commissioner charged with falsifying records says she won't resign

Deerfield Beach Commissioner Sylvia Poitier says she's not going anywhere following her arrest earlier this week on five misdemeanor charges.

Poitier was suspended by Governor Rick Scott Thursday after she was accused of falsifying city records Wednesday, but vowed she won't be resigning.

"How could I be the only person in the world suspended on a misdemeanor?" Poitier said, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The 75 year-old was booked into jail and released Wednesday on the charges related to conflict of interest forms she filed in 2009. Poitier allegedly didn't reveal that her brother, Lionel Ferguson, had loaned $47,000 to the Westside Deerfield Businessmen Association that was still owed when she voted for a $30,000 grant to the group.

Poitier's attorney told the Sun-Sentinel he expects a quick trial and acquittal, and that Poitier will return to finish the rest of her 4-year term which began last month.
