Grand Opening for Housing Complex for Homeless

Verde Gardens Townhouse Community will feature an organic farm and public market

A new housing complex for the homeless celebrated its grand opening in South Miami-Dade County on Wednesday.

Verde Gardens Townhouse Community boasts 145 units, a 22-acre farm and a public market that will offer jobs for residents who are trying to get on their feet, said officials at the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust.

The community was built on the former Homestead Air Force Base, which closed after Hurricane Andrew decimated the area.

The complex, located at 12700 SW 280th St., can house up to 580 residents.

Residents will also tend to the farm and have the chance to start small businesses from what they produce, officials said.

The farmer's market will be open to the public every Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Supportive services for the residents will be provided by Carrfour Supportive Housing.
