Group Home's Caretaker Arrested for Stealing From Mentally Ill Patients: Cops

Daniel Autunno remained jailed Thursday on $33,500 bond

A caretaker of a group home in Oakland Park was arrested for stealing $2,000 worth of items, many belonging to the facility's mentally ill patients, authorities said Thursday.

Daniel Autunno, 24, faces charges including grand theft  and dealing in stolen property after authorities said he stole the items at the Gallagher Group Home. The items included a TV, Blu-Ray play and other electronics, authorities said.

He remained in Broward's mail jail on Thursday on $33,500 bond.

"The majority of the thefts by Autunno were conducted while the patients were attending the Special Olympics in North Carolina," the complaint affidavit said.

He then pawned off the items at Lucky Pawn in Oakland Park, where he falsely said he owned the stolen items, the report said.

On Feb. 4, home's manager saw the missing items and confronted Autunno, who was the only employee at the home at the time.

Autunno confessed to stealing the property and gave the manager the name of the pawn shop, the report said. Online jail records show he was arrested on Feb. 6.

The report said that almost all the items were recovered, the report said.
