Gun Found At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport: Officials

Officials said they intercepted 23 guns at FLL airport this year

Transportation Security Administration officers intercepted a gun at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Friday, officials announced.

The loaded 9-mm Smith and Wesson was discovered in the carry-on bag of Leon Wendell Dancy, a 51-year-old North Miami man, the Broward Sheriff's Office said. Dancy, who was later arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm, was at the Terminal 4 checkpoint for a Spirit Airlines flight headed to LaGuardia Airport, according to authorities.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said the gun was "securely encased" in a black zipper bag.

Dancy bonded out of jail Saturday morning, according to online jail records. It was not immediately known whether he has an attorney.

In a separate incident on Thursday, the TSA said a loaded Glock was found at Tampa International Airport.

Officials said they have intercepted 23 guns at FLL airport this year and more than 1,000 guns throughout airports nationwide.

β€œPlease remember to thoroughly go through your bags before you arrive at the airport,” said Sari Koshetz, an official for the TSA. β€œWe partner with law enforcement, so realize that jail might become the destination you didn't want to go to!”
