Gun Malfunctions 3 Times as Man Tries to Shoot Estranged Wife: Cops

The man faces charges for attempted murder.

A Tampa man was arrested for attempted murder after his gun failed three times when he allegedly tried to shoot his estranged wife, authorities said.

Julio Villanueva-Vasquez, 44, showed up at 23-year-old Katherinez Villanueva's home after 1 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

First, he allegedly used a tool to puncture the car tires of a friend who was visiting Villanueva. Then, police say, he tried to pry open her front door.

Villanueva found him after hearing strange noises. As proof that he was there, she opened the door to take a picture.

Villanueva-Vasquez then rushed into her home and, after a physical struggle, pulled out a semi-automatic handgun from his waist area, according to authorities. He pulled the trigger three times, and each time the gun failed, police said. He then ran away on foot.

Police arrested Villanueva-Vasquez, who had already been issued a domestic violence injunction, was arrested at his house. He was charged with attempted felony murder, burglary with assault, violation of a domestic violence injunction and criminal mischief, authorities said.

Villanueva's only injury was a small laceration to the face.
