Gun-Slinging Mayor's Dad Drops Out of Race

Portner no longer gunning for mayoral job

The pistol-pulling former City Commissioner who drew a firearm on his Broward County Mayor daughter is no longer gunning for the mayor of Tamarac position.

Ed Portner was a long shot for the position after he was charged with armed burglary and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the Oct. 6 incident with his daughter Stacy Ritter.

According to police, Portner, 84, became enraged after he learned Ritter had endorsed his opponent in the mayoral race.

Portner later said he had "wanted to scare the crap of her."

Portner was released earlier this month on $35,000 bond after three days in jail. Yesterday, he said enough was enough, and he would drop out of the race.

"There is too much going on. I have more important things to think about than this race, Portner told the Miami Herald.
