Gun-Slinging Mayor's Dad Gets Probation

Portner pleads guilty to assault, won't serve jail time for gun incident

The pistol-pulling former Tamarac Commissioner who drew a firearm on his Broward County Mayor daughter won't have to serve jail time for the incident.

Ed Portner, who pulled a gun on daughter Stacy Ritter in the Oct. 6 confrontation after Ritter said she wouldn't support his run for mayor of Tamarac, was sentenced to five years probation Thursday, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Portner, 84, who had been charged with armed burglary and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, pleaded guilty only to aggravated assault.

"I feel remorse, but not for myself," Portner told the Sun-Sentinel. "I'm sorry for the angst and embarrassment I caused my family."

Portner had become enraged after he learned Ritter had endorsed his opponent in the mayoral race, and confronted her in her Parkland home.

Portner later said he had "wanted to scare the crap of her." After his arrest, he was released on $35,000 bond. He later dropped out of the race.
