Gusty Winds Knock Down Construction Materials at Hollywood Resort, Minor Injuries Reported

An investigation is underway after several people were injured when construction materials blew off the Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood.

The incident happened around 2:20 p.m. Monday when a gust of wind blew a wood panel that was part of some facade work being done at the resort.

Four people were injured with non-life-threatening injuries, according to resort officials. Two were treated and released at the scene while the other two were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

"The well-being, safety and security of our guests and team members are of paramount importance and the hotel continues to make every effort to ensure that all practices and standards are in line with strict safety and security regulations," resort officials said in a statement.

"It was pretty intense to experience," said Marcial Rodriguez, who was standing in the atrium of the resort when suddenly he heard a loud noise. "It was just dark and then it was light, and we could see all of the plywood and 2x4s just sliding directly off the roof."

"A huge gust of wind came through and it started raining really hard. The scaffolding just came off and collapsed," said David Ordal, witness.

Through the afternoon and evening hours, crews worked to clean up the debris. The main entrance was shut down and traffic was rerouted.

"When we looked up, one of the workers, who was luckily tethered to his harness, just slid. I mean, you could see the water and he just slid off the roof," Rodriguez explained.

Officials said the resort is working with authorities to determine the exact cause.
