Habitat For Humanity Hosts “Women Build Day”

80 women volunteered to work on eight houses in Liberty City on Saturday

The house-builders at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami have struck again – constructing homes in rapid fashion to help make dreams come true for eight Miami families.

The organization held its annual ‘Women Build Day’ on Saturday, hosting more than 80 women at eight Habitat worksites in Liberty City.

Volunteers are critically important to the project. So is corporate sponsor Lowe’s, which pitched in a contribution of $5,000 for the project.

“The Women Build women were able to prove they are overachievers,” said lead volunteer Stephanie Sylvestre.  “I heard one Habitat supervisor say he had never seen so many women who know how to use an electric drill.”

The Miami-Dade Women Build effort, focused on Liberty City, is in line with Miami Habitat’s three-year Liberty City Shine campaign.  The goal is to build new homes for low-income families as well as take a holistic approach to neighborhood development.

Miami Habitat’s programs also reach out to existing neighborhood homeowners and help them with their beautification efforts.

Since its inception, Miami Habitat has built more than 800 homes in Miami-Dade County -- and they’re still going.
