Hollywood police shot and killed a driver who they say attempted to hit officers with his SUV during a pursuit Friday.

Officers began chasing the SUV before 8:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about a reckless driver on North Federal Highway near Sheridan Street, the Hollywood Police Department said in a news release.

When officers attempted to approach the driver, he allegedly tried to hit them and then took off again.

During a second confrontation at NE 6th Street near Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach, officers opened fire, killing the man in the driver's seat, police said. He was declared dead at the scene.

Aerial images showed a late-model Jeep boxed in on the sidewalk by Hollywood police cruisers. The SUV's driver-side window was shattered by bullet holes, and a body was slouched in the driver seat.

His identity was not released.

Investigators were searching for a witness in a 2008 or 2009 Dodge Caravan with blue tinted windows that may have been struck by the driver.
