Heat Guard Richardson Partially Tears MCL: Report

Heat guard Josh Richardson reportedly tore his MCL and could possibly miss the start of the season

Miami Heat guard Josh Richardson partially tore the MCL in his right knee, according to a report from Yahoo.

This is potentially a big blow for Miami as the season approaches. The timetable for Richardson's return is unknown at this time. It is likely that the second-year player will be out of action for at least a month. With the regular season still over a month away, there remains a chance Richardson misses no action.

Richardson figures to see an increase in playing time this season after the Heat said goodbye to several veterans. The guard shined in his rookie season and was part of multiple big moments. Richardson gives Miami an electrifying option that can compete on both sides of the court. When Richardson had the ball, Miami often made things happen and turned games around.

If Richardson misses time, the beneficiaries of the playing time figure to be Tyler Johnson and Dion Waiters. While those two players could provide production, head coach Erik Spoelstra would be dealing with an obvious depth problem. The Heat are relying on Richardson to put up even bigger numbers than he did last season.

In the 2015-16 season, Richardson averaged nearly seven points a game and shot 46% from three-point land. The Heat haven't announced a starting shooting guard for the 2016-17 season, but Richardson is one of the prime candidates to win the gig.

Miami's preseason schedule will get underway on October 4th against the Washington Wizards.
