Savvy Smartphone Apps to Help You Save Cash

From savings to stacking a little extra cash, there's apps out there that promise to help you with the dollars.

Experts said it can be like modern day coupon clipping, or price comparing without actually going to any stores.

"It can be a great thing. Imagine you're in the store and you can compare something in front of you to something online from a variety of different places," said Charles Sachs with Private Wealth Counsel.

South Florida certified financial planner Charles Sachs said there can be real advantages to saving a couple bucks here and there.

"Just $5 a day can add up to $1,800 a year," Sachs said.

If you're interested in making money from these kinds of apps, here are just a few of the many you might find useful:

  • Ebates helps get cash back from retail stores and compares price.
  • ibotta can help you redeem some daily deals.
  • Snap by Groupon offers rebates on groceries. After you buy them, you need to upload pictures of your receipts.
  • Swagbucks allows you to collect online currency that can become gift cards just by doing things like shopping and playing games online.

This new way to save and make money is easy with modern technology. With your mobile devices you can use the apps quickly, anytime and anywhere.

But Sachs has a warning, and it comes down to information.

"Everyone has a smartphone these days and, you know, they call them smartphones for a reason. They can do a lot of good but people need to remember that a smartphone knows a lot about you," Sachs cautioned.

Most apps ask for personal information when you install. Sachs said just make sure to do your research and know what you're agreeing to.

"None of us go through those legal terms of service but remember the main thing about apps, it knows your phone number. Many times it asks where you are. Much different than any device we have used in the past," Sachs said.
