Edgar Portela, 30, and wife Yanderi Soto, 30, were taken into custody after taking items from the more than 50 stores shelves in Miami-Dade and Broward counties and returning them with old receipts or pretending they were gifts, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Detectives say the couple had a 12-year-old child with them as well as a 10-month-old baby.

The children are now being cared for by relatives while the couple is being held at a Broward County jail. The Department of Children and Families has no prior history with the family, spokeswoman Lissette Valdes-Valle said.

Portela and Soto are charged with theft, conspiracy and fraud and they are each being held on $15,000 bond. It is unknown whether they have an attorney.
