Hialeah MMA Fighter Given No Bond After Leading Police on Manhunt Wednesday

A judge ordered former MMA fighter John Chavez to remain in custody one day after the 29-year-old led police on a manhunt that prompted several South Florida schools to be placed on lockdown.

Chavez appeared in court Thursday morning via video conference where he faced charges for aggravated assault, burglary and eluding police.

He became irate during the hearing and had his microphone shut off after arguing with the judge. Video of the exchange shows Chavez pacing and guesturing at Judge Mindy Glazer while handcuffed. Judge Glazer eventually asked a corrections officer to "take him out" of the holding area.

While he was given bond on the new charges, a previous bond for a felony charge was revoked – assuring he will remain behind bars until his trial.

According to a police report, the Mixed Martial Arts fighter became upset when he discovered his mother had obstained a restraining order against him and started waving a knife around.

When officer's responded to the home, Chavez fled on to the grounds of a local elementary school. He was captured hours later outside a nearby home. Hialeah Police Sgt. Carl Zogby said Chavez suffers from depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

"Imagine -- big, strong, trained fighter having a psychiatric crisis, armed with a knife -- potentially very dangerous," Zogby added.
