Hialeah and Miami Lakes Mayors To Box for Charity

Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi and Hialeah Mayor Carlos Hernandez say their fight will be more like an epic brawl

Don’t let the friendship between Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi and Hialeah Mayor Carlos Hernandez fool you – both mayors are about to throw it down in the ring.

They’re preparing for a boxing fight to raise money for children’s charity programs in Hialeah and Miami Lakes, Pizzi said.

“We’re very excited, because this is going to give us an opportunity to maybe do something really great,” Hernandez said.

Both mayors say the match is going to be more like an epic brawl. It will go down at the Milander sports center in Hialeah, though no official date has been set yet.

The showdown developed from a photo the two mayors took fist to fist as a joke last week. Now, as public servants, they say they’re going to give the people what they want.

“Oh yeah, this has been the talk of the town since the pictures were put around in the Internet, and we’re getting calls actually from people that are interested in sponsoring this thing, so I think at the end of the day we’re going to be able to do something really, really positive for our community,” Hernandez said.

Between Pizzi’s boxing skills from the mean streets of Brooklyn and Hernandez’s mixed martial arts training, both guys think they’ve got this one in the bag.

“I’ve decided I’m gonna knock him out in the first 30 seconds,” Pizzi said.

“Don’t tell Mike, but he doesn’t stand a chance,” Hernandez said, chuckling.
