A recent study from one Canadian based vehicle tracking company does not have good news for drivers across Florida – ranking four of the top five deadliest highways in the country right here in the Sunshine State.
The study from Geotab ranked U.S. 1 – which runs all the way to Key West – as the deadliest highway in America with 1,011 fatal crashes resulting in 1,079 deaths over the past decade. The road goes across over a dozen counties in Florida and the survey did not break down the number of deaths per county.
U.S. 41, another road that runs through Miami-Dade County, came in second with 714 crashes resulting in 772 people being killed. U.S. 17, which goes through both Miami-Dade and Broward counties, came in third with 529 crashes leading to 614 deaths.
In total, six highways in the state ranked in the top 10. The results were based on the number of deadly crashes per million vehicles traveled on each road per year and used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration.
I-75 and I-95 ranked 30th and 66th respectively while State Road 826, better known to drivers as the Palmetto Expressway, came in third from the bottom as one of the least deadly highways in America.
The study is open to interpretation, according to the American Automobile Association in Florida. The group says results are dependent on formulas used to calculate conclusions.
