A religious guru at a South Florida Hindu temple was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for sexually abusing a young student repeatedly over the course of a year.
In 2008, Sandeep Munshi taught drums in Southwest Ranches and used his position to abuse a 10-year-old female student during weekly sessions at her home. Munshi, 49, forced the girl to perform oral sex and masterbated in front of him, according to the victim's testimony.
He was convicted of sexual battery on a child last month.
Munshi had rejected a plea deal to serve 15 years in prison.
In court Thursday, the victim's family submitted a letter read to the court.
"You are a far cry from the word guru. Words cannot describe the pain, agony and mental torture you have brought upon my family and most of all a happy-go-lucky, beautiful and loving child," prosecutor Mary Ann Braun read.
