Hotel Maid Returns $6,000 Left in Hotel Room

Here's one you might not have expected. John Hughes conceived the story for the Jennifer Lopez vehicle Maid in Manhattan. The film stars J-Lo as a struggling single mother who works as a maid in a Manhattan hotel. In classic Cinderella fashion, she goes on to have a romance with a senatorial candidate played by Ralph Fiennes.

Need a sign that there is still some good left in the world? Look no further than Jeanne Mydil.

The cleaning woman at the Miami International Airport Hotel was honored Thursday for returning $6,000 in cash that she found in a hotel nightstand after the guests had checked out.

What makes the honest act even more remarkable is Mydil's husband died just a week before and she was struggling to figure out how to pay for his burial.

But Mydil had a feeling the money was more important to someone else than it might be for her, even in the dire situation. She was right.

It was left behind by a group of Texas missionaries who were taking it to Mydil's native country of Haiti to help with earthquake relief work.

The hotel tracked the group down and gave it back. In turn, the Texas group gave Mydil $100.

The hotel named her Employee of the Month for May and have set up a fund for people to donate to help Mydil pay for her husband's funeral costs. If you would like to donate, call Miami International Airport Hotel at 305-871-4100.
